No, this isn’t a superhero movie from Netflix, but it may as well be considering how much the streaming behemoth will be doling out for their latest big movie production entitled Red Notice.
Written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber (Skyscraper, Dodgeball, Easy A), the movie entails a global heist and international action thriller focused on the pursuit of the most wanted art their in the world.
Netflix has greenlit this thing, once it was purchased from Universal. That’s how Dwayne “The Rock/The Future Back Adam” Johnson and Gal “Wonder Woman” Gadot was attached to this project.
Now that Netflix has this set for a 2020 production, they decided to call up Ryan “Deadpool” Reynolds (and yes, we’re ignoring the Green Lantern moniker here) to make, what has to be, their biggest commitment to date rumored to be in the $130 million range — and that’s steep, even by Netflix’s standards.
Ironically, this flies in the face of recent comments by Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos, who shared with this TV and film executives that they needed to be more picky with its spending on big budget productions.
How’s that budget-consciousness tasting now, Ted?
Deadline was able to get a quote from Johnson, who has been connected both with Thurber in Skyscraper and production house FlynnPictureCo. and Seven Bucks with Rampage.
“With Red Notice, our goal at Seven Bucks Productions was to break down traditional barriers and create a true global event for the audience. Netflix has illustrated that they are the perfect partners to accomplish this goal.
“I admire the ambition of Netflix to become one of the biggest movie studios in the world,” Johnson said. “Their original content generates critical acclaim and invites full collaboration on every level of production. Their unbridled enthusiasm for Red Notice is equally matched by their commitment to entertaining audiences on an international scale.
“As the landscape of movies, distribution and audience consumption continues to evolve, our Seven Bucks focus is to continue to find the best platform and partners to thrive in this ever changing environment. Director/writer Rawson Thurber has delivered a dynamic script that me and my co-stars and partners-in-heist, Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds can’t wait to shoot.”
Of course, those are PR talking points, but good quote about creating some excitement for this blockbuster nonetheless. Red Notice is slated for November 2020.
