Maleficent: Mistress of Evil

Look Ma, Disney is releasing a sequel! Just kidding, we know that’s par for the course. But all joking aside, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil promises to be the powerful follow up to Maleficent (2014).

Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning return and are joined by the incomparable Michelle Pfeiffer and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Disney has some work to do to keep this story original following the major plot twist from the first movie. But if they can handle that, they’ve got another sure fire hit on their hands.

Gemini Man

Will Smith. Time travel. Sci-fi. If those three things in one movie don’t get you excited…let’s just move on. Clive Owen joins Smith for a unique action-thriller set in dual timelines. Add to the star power of the cast an Academy Award-winning director (Ang Lee) and power house producers (Jerry Bruckheimer, Dana Goldberg), these people know how to make good movies. A rare non-themed release for this time of year, but one that promises to remind us all that the Fresh Prince is in fact the king.

Lucy in the Sky

This movie could either fall flat on its face, or it could be one of the best films of the year. Let’s put it this way, the story is so original that it could be too ‘different’ for people to really enjoy. In a time where it’s either sequels, prequels, or remakes in Hollywood, we’re more than ready for something out of the box. If you are too, then check out the trailer for Lucy in the Sky and get pumped for this movie.

Zombieland: Double Tap

Now this is what I’m talking about. If you’re going to do a sequel then please let it be a sequel to Zombieland. Are you ready for the most hardcore, hysterical, zombie-tastic movie of the year?

This movie isn’t going to win over the hearts of serious critics (lame), but it is going to be full-throttle, pedal to the metal fun. A stacked cast, a timeless story, and a dash of perfect timing. Zombieland: Double Tap is going to light up the box office like a Roman Candle.

Joker

How could we possibly compile this list and not include this inevitable masterpiece? Exactly. We couldn’t. Sure to be a controversial box office hit, but without doubt will land Joaquin Phoenix an Oscar nomination (cough–award–cough).

Todd Phillips is tackling more than just an origin story with this one. Be ready for a glimpse into real-life issues plaguing America today. Make no mistake: this is still just fiction, but it could very well turn out to be the best kind of fiction–the kind that teaches us something.
