The Fancasting Room | DC’s Mistress of Magic, Zatanna

Warner Bros and DC Comics finally look like they have somewhat of a plan. Their future is looking bright for the future of their collaborative films. Now would be a great time to talk about characters we have wanted for a while. In this case, the Mistress of Magic, Zatanna.

With seven films planned through 2020 and others still in development, there is reason to pay attention to DC Films. One of those movies appears to be centered around Zatanna.

Bringing Zatanna into the CBM fray will add a new dimension to the “Worlds of DC”. She would open new doors where the multiverse can go. Like Marvel’s Doctor Strange, Zatanna Zatara is a stage and actual magician. Zatanna is a ‘Homo Magi,’ or part of “a sub-race of naturally magic-wielding humans”.

Zatanna has been affiliated with the Justice League multiple times, as well as having a romantic history with John Constantine. This means we could see Zatanna fighting alongside the Justice League or even Justice League Dark.

Now we’re closer than ever to seeing her character brought to life on the big screen. The only question that remains is: Who will WB and DC cast to play her? Luckily for them, I have some ideas.

Let’s walk inside The Fancasting Room for Zatanna Zatara…

Ana De Armas

It’s safe to say that Ana de Armas is one of the most popular actresses working today. She took on many foreign language films early in her career, so she has a global following. American audiences had to wait until 2016 to discover her talent when she starred in War Dogs opposite Jonah Hill and Miles Teller.

Since then, she has starred in Hands of Stone, Blade Runner 2049, Knives Out, and is featured in the next James Bond film, No Time to Die. She’s a versatile actress, which is why DC and WB would love to add an actress of her caliber to their universe. Ana de Armas could easily take on a superhero vehicle of her own. Zatanna seems like the perfect role for her.

Eiza Gonzalez

An actress whose star has recently started to rise, Eiza Gonzalez is quickly becoming one of today’s more recognized actresses. She was first in Edgar Wright’s critical darling, Baby Driver in 2017. Since then, Gonzalez has since starred in several recognizable films. You have seen her in Alita: Battle Angel, Hobbs & Shaw, Bloodshot, and a role in Legendary Pictures’ upcoming monster brawl, Godzilla v Kong.

Gonzalez is a talented actress who has already shown throughout her brief career that she can handle big time action films and hold her own opposite big time actors. She already has experience in the comic book/superhero genre with her starring role in 2020’s Bloodshot. Taking on another CBM role as Zatanna should be a walk in the park for the 30-year-old actress. DC better look her way when casting starts.

Kaya Scodelario

Kaya Scodelario broke onto the scene as Teresa in The Maze Runner trilogy. She has since starred in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and 2019’s creature feature, Crawl.

Yet, she really hasn’t had that major breakout blockbuster role. Starring in a DC superhero film could be huge for her career. With the capability to lead a series of her own, the role of Zatanna could be perfect for her. Some people might want a “big name star” for this role, but Scodelario is as talented as they come. A role like this could propel her to into stardom, which has happened for many before her.

Jamie Alexander

While Jamie Alexander is already part of a superhero-shared cinematic universe, her character of Lady Sif has been missing in the MCU ever since Thor: The Dark World, much to fans’ chagrin. Alexander crushed the role of Sif, which is why MCU fans are confused as to why the character just disappeared. It left many hoping she and Thor would strike up a romantic relationship.

However, if Alexander is done as Sif, then she is free to jump ship and climb aboard the DC train. She’s an insanely talented actress who obviously is well versed in playing comic characters. Marvel hasn’t utilized her well. It would be nice to see her in the role of Zatanna for DC to lead a franchise of her own.

Naomi Scott

Last, but certainly not least, Naomi Scott has made quite a name for herself in the industry. She burst onto the big screen in 2017’s Power Rangers as the pink ranger Kimberly. Scott has since gone on to star in Disney’s live-action Aladdin remake and 2019’s Charlie’s Angels reboot.

Scott is a brilliant actress who has a commanding screen presence. She steals every scene she is in with her magnetic presence and powerful performances. Scott is more than capable of handling big action sequences. Getting Scott for the role of Zatanna to lead that franchise would be a huge win for DC and WB — one they should certainly look into making a reality.
